Time is money in this world and because of that sometimes the small safety tasks can be put off. Here are 5 safety tasks that can be done in under 5 minutes. Performing these tasks will help save time and money in the long run by helping to prevent issues that can arise costing much more time and money than if these 5 simple tasks are performed.

  1. Maintain the first-aid kit and eyewash station. All first-aid kits need to be an OSHA compliant first-aid kit, OSHA requires by federal regulation a standard 1910.151.b kit. This kit will be able to treat minor injuries that occur in the workplace. OSHA compliant first-aid kits can be found in the link below. Though just having the correct first-aid kit is not enough, one also must make sure they are keeping it up-to-date by making sure nothing in the kit becomes expired without being noticed and replaced. As far as eyewash stations go, making sure that they are working and have the proper cleaning to keep them safe to use. These two tasks can be done once a month or so and takes less than 5 minutes.

  1. Keeping the runways clear. Making sure all parts and clutter is kept out of the runways at-all-times can not only keep all employees safe but can also help with efficiency of the shop. When a person has to walk over something in their way or has to walk though a amaze rather than a clear pathway it will make their transition time much longer than if it is clear and easy to navigate.
  2. Keeping tools organized. This is a huge time saver if done correctly and kept up every day. This task can take awhile the first time if it has not been done in a while, but it is essential to do and if kept up daily it will become a less than 5 minutes task that can help with efficiency and safety. Knowing where a person or team’s tools are will make it quicker to find when needed but will also keep a person safe. Often tools can fall on technicians or get stepped on. It may take some time at first but worth the time to maintain your shop.
  3. Clear preventive communication. Communication is key, this saying has been around for a long time and for good reason. Keeping communication about pads wearing out, leaks, and loose bolts with shop managers before they wear out is important. This preventative communication can keep the cost of repair down as well as minimize the time of repair. This will also help keep the safety of those working on the lifts.
  4. Grease your lifts. This process can take 2-3 minuets and is often overlooked. Greasing the lifts will help with the efficiency and longevity of the lift. This will help the lift to rise evenly and quicker. Keeping the lift evenly lifting will keep the car safer on the rack in return keeping your  people safer.

These 5 tips take less than 5 minutes and can keep the shop a safer more efficient place to work.
